Art Nouveau Silver Cream Jug, Joseph Gloster, 1911
Here we have an elegant Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Cream Jug from the early years of the reign of George V. The cream jug has a tall, slender body with a bulbous base and a whiplash style handle. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The cream jug is made in Birmingham by Joseph Gloster Ltd and dates to 1911. Joseph Gloster founded his highly successful firm of silversmiths in the late 1880s and the company remained in business until the late 1970s. They produced a wide range of silverware of consistently good quality.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just a tiny smooth blob of silver where the handle has been professionally repaired at some point in the distant past. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cream jug stands 13cm / 5.1ins high, is 9.1cm / 3.6ins from lip to handle and is 5.5cm / 2.1ins in diameter at its widest part. It weighs a substantial 104.2g / 3.7oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the side of the body are clear to read, although the makers' mark is a little rubbed. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter m for 1911 and the J.G Ltd makers' mark for Joseph Gloster Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cream jug.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
