A George VI Coronation Stool From 1937
A stool designed by Edward Barnsley and used at the coronation of George VI in 1937. There were 5700 stools made for the coronation by various different antique furniture makers, this one was made by B North of West Wycombe. They were all made to very strict tolerances and inspected by Government officials before being stamped with the GR VI Crown. They were all made in oak, finished with a silver wax paste that went in to the open pores of the timber giving them a silver hue. These were then upholstered in a specially woven blue velvet and gold braid (this stool has been recovered). Width 18” (46cm) Depth 12”(30cm) Height 19” (48cm)
