French Empire Period Metamorphic Chair

1 of 3
Toward the end of the 18th century dual-purpose chairs and tables became fashionable as wealthy merchants and landowners revelled in the novelty and ingenuity of space-saving mechanical furniture. Most metamorphic chairs of this type conceal library steps but this remarkable example opens to reveal a small table. From the design and construction of the chair it probably originated in France during the reign of Louis XVI ca. 1790 or a few years later during the early years of the Napoleonic Empire. The chair is made of walnut with a carved, demi-lune or fan-shaped backrest and, despite extensive research, there appears to be no other recorded example. In view of the rarity of the item we are offering this chair in its un-restored condition. There are some shrinkage cracks to the seat and back of the chair and there are old traces of woodworm but the chair is still in good condition for its age and it would make an excellent addition to any collection. Close examination suggests that the table top was unfinished when new, probably covered with a linen cloth before food or tea was served. Item No. 0029.
