Royal Public Library Bookplate -1744
The Royal Public Library Bookplate of Rev. John Moore engraved by John Pine in 1736. This Bookplate is dated 1744/5. by William Cole's hand written details at the top of the bookplate.
King George I, purchased the collection of 29,000 books and 1,700 manuscripts from the estate of Rev. John Moore after his death in 1714 and gifted to Cambridge University Library in 1715.
The above bookplate, recording this gift was not prepared until 1736. There are 4 sizes to the engraved plate. The Arms of the University are centered, with Phoebus Apollo on the left, with a sample of the collection at his feet. Minerva sits to the right and the wreathed head of George I appears in the medallion below.
At the top of the bookplate the hand written words of the Rev.William Cole (1714-1782), who was a fellow of Cambridge University. Also an Antiquary and noted Historian on Cambridgeshire.
The bookplate is engraved in the Jacobean Armorial style on 18th century paper and has the initals of John Pine on the bottom left hand side.
