Tall and attractive Burmantofts Faience Art Nouveau jardiniere or planter with matching stand c1890. Jardiniere and stand both of inverted baluster-form. Stylised tube-lined design with flowers in tonal colours. Thickly glazed vivid olive-green fluted lower band to both. Jardiniere and stand with impressed Burmantofts Faience mark and impressed 'J' together with colourway code. Overall height is 97 cm. The jardiniere measures 36.5 cm maximum diameter and 27.5 cm in height. Maximum diameter of stand is 29 cm. A substantial and highly decorative piece.
This jardiniere and stand is in overall very good condition commensurate with age and use. No cracks, chips or restoration. Some glaze flaws to orange areas from original. Extremely minor nibbles to raised tubelined decoration. Some crazing to green glazed areas. Internally there are some abrasions to inside rim and bowl from use. Please see images as these form an important part of the description.

The company (initially producing architectural ceramics) was started by William Wilcock and John Lassey in 1859 following the discovery of fire clay in a mine owned by Wilcock. In 1880, with an established market for middle-class home decorative objects, they ventured into the production of art pottery as an addition to industrial glazed ceramic products. The company was fortunate in having both coal and high-purity clay on the same site enabling good reproduction of shape and glazes of high clarity and brilliance. The most recognisable wares are their high-fired monochrome pieces as well as their Anglo-Persian vases - their range of decorative wares also including tube-lined and lustre pieces. By 1885 Burmantofts' products were on sale in London (at Harrods and Liberty's), Paris and Montreal. However, by 1904 their products were no longer profitable due to competing products from Britain and nearby Europe, and production of their Art Pottery ceased. The firm finally ceased production of architectural ceramics and closed in 1957. Viewing welcomed - please contact us in advance.
