12” English Fusee Wall Timepiece by S. Hume 1870.
We present for consideration, this immaculate fusee wall clock with 12” dial, by maker Samuel Hume of 17 Elvet Bridge, Durham.
Born 1836, into a clockmaking family in the village of Glanton, Nr Alnwick, Northumberland, Hume became apprentice (and later employee) to his clock and watchmaking father Robert Hume, in Glanton during the 1850’s. However, by 1861 (then 25 and married), Hume lived at Houghton Le Spring, Tyne and Wear, as a then qualified watch and clockmaker.
By c1868, Hume had again relocated and was now living and working at 17 Elvet Bridge, Durham (a premises that remains today), from where he spent the next 40+ years as a successful watch and clockmaker and jeweller, until his death on the 4 May 1909 at the age of 73 years old.
(NB: He was probably still working in 1902, aged 64, given that his name appears in a local trade directory of the time).
The clocks turned roundhead face and boxed cabinet are made of lovely solid golden Oak, with a hinged inspection door located on the side of the box and a turn catch hinged regulator door to the bottom of the box. The clocks metal dial has black Roman numerals and Hume’s details, finished with its original pair of blued Spade hands, secured with a pinned collet. The clocks dial is then protected by a thick glaze mounted in a brass bezel.
The clock benefits from a quality 8-day single fusee chain driven movement set between concentrically snailed rectangular plates with and turned pillars and comes with its original 73mm diameter brass pendulum bob and a brass winding key.
A superb wall clock from a well-respected and provincial North-East of England clockmaker. One who hailed from a strong clockmaking family dynasty and heritage.
