1856 Portrait of Coldstream Guard naive painting portrait %%alt5%%
A rare and rather splendid naive oil on canvas portrait of a Sergeant of the 2nd Battalion, Coldstream Guards of 1856. Depicted in his uniform, the subject stands by a gilt framed notice of the Jubilee of the Coldstream Guards and the plaque read ‘given the the non commissioned officers 12th June 1856.‘ The event was most likely to celebrate the return of the Regiment from the Crimean war as they returned to England in June 1856.
There is a name in pencil to the back, possibly Watson Edwards or similar.

The portrait is with some repairs, small losses and over-painting but this is a truly rare and delightful portrait nonetheless.
In a large and impressive 19th c frame.

Measuring 71 cm wide and 91cm high
Frame 119cm x 103 cm
