A very unusual bowl, certainly a domestic food bowl in some wise. Such a large pedestal base I have not seen before, smaller footed bowls and skimmers are not uncommon here in Wales but not of this magnitude. The whole of the outside was painted deep red, possibly from new, there are still plenty of traces of paint and colour on the wood. I have had this bowl for a good long while and because of that foot I've been looking for anything similar. The only vaguely similar I've seen are in pottery and smaller. The turning lines of the pole-lathe are clearly seen right up into the turned hollow base but inside the bowl they disappeared, worn smooth perhaps 200 years ago. The patina of age is dense and lustrous.
