19th C. Dutch Silver Sugar Spoon, G. Huisman
This is a traditional Dutch style silver sugar spoon from the late 19th century. The spoon has a long scooped bowl with a decorated flange around the rim. The stem is narrow where it joins the bowl and broadens out towards the finial. It is made in 833 grade silver by Amsterdam silversmith G. Huisman and dates to around the 1880s / 1890s.
The spoon is hand decorated in pin style with scrollwork on the flange of the bowl and a diamond shaped lozenge on the upper part of the stem between two decorative bands.
Condition of the spoon is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface scratching you would expect after over 120 years. You could use it as a sugar spoon today or it would make a great addition to any spoon collection. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 12.8cm long and weighs a respectable 10.4g.
The marks on the underside of the stem are the sword mark, which was used to show a minimum grade of 833/1000 silver on small items that didn't have a date letter or assay office mark and the GH2 makers' mark for G. Huisman of Amsterdam, which was registered in 1884.
