19th C Oil On Board Painting Of A Steam Train
A rare 19th century example of a rather nice piece of folk art. Here we have an original oil on board behind glass, very probably in its original frame, of a Great Eastern Railway passenger tank engine at Stratford. This painting has just been recently acquired by us having been in the family of the artist since it was painted. The artist was apparently a station master on the line whose hobby was painting. He chose his favourite engine as the subject and painted it in situ. The painting is signed R. M Warrington who was the grandfather of the previous owner. This particular engine, number 189, was notable for being the first one to be painted in blue livery in 1882 - perhaps that’s why it was Mr Warrington’s favourite.
The subject is an 0-0-4 engine. To work the suburban services over the "Metropolitan Extensions" associated with the opening of Liverpool Street, S.W.Johnson produced thirty 0-4-4 tank engines. The construction of these engines was divided between two builders, Neilson & Co and the Avonside Engine Co. in 1872 -1873. They were numbered 134-139, 162-170, 185-199.
The class was withdrawn from service between 1902 and 1912.
Some small losses to the frame bottom right and top central.
Measuring Sight - 48.5cm x 31cm Frame - 69cm wide x 50 cm high x 4cm deep
