19th.c. Blonde Turtle Shell
Fine example of a ‘blonde’ loggerhead turtle shell. Prized by 18th and 19th century sailors for their meat, the leftover turtle’s shell were often presented to the crew who to occupy idle moments would remove the patterned outer layers and polish the carapace below to a smooth bone white colour. The resulting shell would be presented to loved ones as an unusual and decorative souvenir.
We have had several such shells over the years but this one is unusual having the underside of the shell still attached. Excellent condition, presented on an associated wooded stand.
Dimensions length 18”, width 13”, depth 4”. Please contact us for more images, delivery and shipping quotes. Alternatively you are welcome to view and collect at our large warehouse showroom in Llandudno Junction, North Wales (approximately 45mins from Chester). We have a large and ever changing selection of genuine good quality antique furniture of all types and have twice been shortlisted for the Home and Antiques Magazine Antique Shop of the Year Award. 01492 580022.
