2 x Art Deco Uranium Glass Vases, Stölzle, c.1930s
Here we have a very stylish pair of Art Deco Uranium Glass Vases. The vases stand on four diagonal feet from which the tapered rectangular panelled bodies rise to a sculpted lip. There are diagonal fins on either side of the bodies.
Being made of uranium glass, the vase fluoresces under ultraviolet light. Uranium glass is made by adding a small, non dangerous, amount of uranium oxide to the glass mix before melting. It was first developed in the 19th century but reached its peak of popularity in the early 20th century. After the Second World War supplies of uranium became very restricted and the glowing glass was no longer available for sale.
The vases were made by the Austrian firm Stölzle at their Hermanova Hut factury in what is now the Czech Republic and date to the 1930s. They are pattern number 19249 in the Stölzle catalogue. The firm was founded by Carl Stölzle in 1805 and had a number of factories at different sites in the old Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Hermanova Hut factory was opened in 1907 and most of their classic Art Deco designs were produced there.
Condition is good with the exception of a chip to the top of the diagonal fin on one vase. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each vase is 22cm / 8.7ins high and 12.8cm / 5ins across. The pair together weigh in at 1.43kg / 50.5oz.
As is usually the case with Stölzle glass, there is no makers' mark of any kind.
