2 x George IV Silver Knife Rests, John Reily 1822
Here we have a good quality pair of George IV Sterling Silver Knife Rests. They are in the traditional style of a central horizontal bar, on which the knife sits, with diagonal cross ends each arm of which has a ball finial. These are large enough to rest a carving knife on one and carving fork on the other, or an individual dinner knife and fork could sit next to each other on a single rest.
The knife rests are made in London by silversmith John Reily and date to 1822. John Reily was an accomplished silversmith who made a variety of items in the first quarter of the 19th century.
Condition is good, with just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 200 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each knife rest is 6.7cm / 2.6ins long and 3.3cm / 1.3ins across the ends. The pair together weigh in at a respectable 44.9g / 1.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks are inevitably a little rubbed, being struck on a curved bar and having been polished for 200 years. However they are still easy to decipher. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter g for 1822, the George IV duty mark and the I R makers' mark for John Reily.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the knife rests.
