2 x Silver Plate Pepper Shakers, Elkington, 1929
This is a stylish pair of George V Silver Plate Pepper Shakers of lighthouse form. The pepper shakers have spreading bases with the shaker tops screwing securely onto the body about halfway down. Each one has a turned finial. The two shakers are the same but one could be used for salt if desired.
The pepper shakers are made in Birmingham by the renowned firm of Elkington & Co and date to 1929. Founded by George Elkington in 1836, the company registered the world's first patent for electroplating silver in 1838. They remained at the forefront of UK silver plate production alongside their fine Sterling Silver work right up until 1963 when they were merged with Walker & Hall and Mappin & Webb to form British Silverware.
Condition is generally good with no significant plate loss and just a little salt corrosion around the bases, suggesting that they have been used for salt at some point in their lives. They still look very smart. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each pepper shaker stands 8.2cm / 3.2ins high and is 4.3cm / 1.7ins in diameter across the base. The pair together weigh 256.6g / 9oz.
Both shakers are marked on the underside of the bases with the Elkington Plate stamp and the Elkington date letter S for 1929.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
