2 x Victorian Silver Carver Rests, Sheffield, 1895
Here we have a distinguished pair of late Victorian Sterling Silver Carver Rests. The rests, one for the carving knife and one for the carving fork, are shaped as cow horns mounted on circular plinths. The bases of the plinths and the central bands on the cow horns are decorated with flowing motifs featuring thistles, roses, daffodils and shamrocks to represent the four nations of the United Kingdom.
The carver rests are made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths Harrison Brothers & Howson and date to 1895. The firm was founded in 1847 when James & Henry Harrison and James Howson acquired the silversmith business of Thomas Sansom & Sons. They quickly established themselves as high class cutlers, silversmiths and electroplaters and remained in the Harrison and Howson families until the business was bought out by Viner's Ltd in 1923, although the brand name was continued by Viner's for some years after that date.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and only the barest minimum of superficial surface wear despite being nearly 130 years old. It would seem that they have only been lightly used in that time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The rests each measure 8.5cm / 3.3ins between the tips of the horns, 3.9cm / 1.5ins in diameter across the base and stand 5.1cm / 2ins high. The pair together weigh in at a very respectable 67.0g / 2.36oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the undersides of the bases, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Gothic date letter c for 1895 and the H H makers' mark for Henry Harrison of Harrison Brothers & Howson.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the carver rests.
