4 Silver Gilt Anointing Spoons, Chester 1910
Set of 4 Miniature Silver Gilt Anointing Spoons, Chester 1910, can't identify the maker (V & Co. ?).
Each of the silver-gilt spoon has an oval bowl, divided into two lobes, engraved with acanthus scrolls with stem decorated on both sides and is a miniature replica of the Coronation Anointing Spoon.
The original 12th C anointing spoon is one of the oldest objects in the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London.
The anointing takes place before the investiture and crowning of the sovereign during the coronation ceremony. The Archbishop pours holy oil into the spoon, and anoints the sovereign on the hands, breast and head.
While sterling silver gilt replicas of the anointing spoon have been manufactured since 1870s, after 1910 the quality of spoons started to decline.
The set offered for sale here belongs to the earlier spoons and was hallmarked in Chester in 1910 and has great detail and quality. It is presented in its original, fitted, red leather/leatherette box. Hinge and clasp in great order. The interior is lined with ivory silk and velvet.
Minor age related wear to the spoons (slightly tarnished back of bowls in places) and box, but no damage.
Stunning, tactile collectable set.
This item is available to view at the Red House Antiques Centre in York.
