6 x George VI Silver Teaspoons, Jos. Williams 1939
This is a decorative cased set of six George VI Sterling Silver Teaspoons from just before the Second World War. The spoons have threaded stems with a trailing flower design at the top. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The teaspoons are made by Josiah Williams & Co in Bristol and assayed in London in 1939. The box is marked for the retailer Pleasance & Harper Ltd of Bristol. Josiah Williams & Co of Bristol were a hugely successful firm of silversmiths, the biggest in England outside of London, Birmingham and Sheffield. They traced their history back to Robert Williams succeeding to the business of William Woodman in around 1838. The firm passed through several generations of the Williams family becoming Josiah Williams & Co in 1879. Later partners included George Jackson and David Fullerton before they became a limited company in 1925. They finally ceased trading around 1940.
Condition is very good with no dings or denbts and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. The box has a little bit of scuffing on the corners but the inside is in nice condition and the clasp and hinges are in full working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each teaspoon is 10.7cm / 4.2ins long and the set of six together, unboxed, weighs in at a very respectable 57.5g / 2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the undersides of the bowls, are clear to read with just a little rubbing to some of the makers' marks. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter D for 1939 and the J W & Co makers' mark for Josiah Williams & Co.
