A Rare Bronze Cupid/ Putti Desk Ornament. 18th C
An extremely rare bronze Putti/Cupid desk ornament or paperweight, it is fixed securely with a handmade screw, to an unusual marble base, the Putti is wonderfully modelled with the features being sharp.
The winged putti appears to be saying a prayer.
There are chips to the marble, the yellow strips on the photographs show old soft tape to stop scratching the surface it might stand on.
A very interesting item from the 18th century, possibly collected from The Grand Tour.
The term "Grand Tour" refers to the 17th- and 18th-century custom of a traditional trip of Europe undertaken by upper-class young European men of sufficient means and rank (typically accompanied by a chaperon, such as a family member) when they had come of age (about 21 years old). Young women of equally sufficient means ("debutantes")
