A Rather Rare Georgian Painted Dial Bracket Clock %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A Rather Rare Georgian Painted Dial Bracket Clock by Barber c1830, It is not often you can date a antique clock to within a few years of manufacture but this clock has a very good clue! The dial was painted by the Company Walker and Finnemore of Birmingham, Clock dial makers. The company was initially set up by William Finnemore (b1766 -1838) who was firstly in partnership with Geroge Walker as Walker & Finnemore, between 1808 and 1811. In 1812, William Finnemore later worked in partnership with his two sons William and George. The company continued until 1854 when it was taken over and by William & Richard Griffith. With this information we can say with confidence that this clock was made between 1808 and 1811.. a very small window of three years. This dial has not been restored in any way and still retains its original 210 year old work. It has aged beautifully and makes a welcome change to a brass dialled antique clock. England at this time was going through a lot of changes, King George III was declared insane in 1810 and started the Regency period with the Prince taking control by Proxy. We were firmly at war with France, as well as the Nepoleonic wars.. we were also fighting the Anglo-Russia War 1808-1812 and the Peninsular war 1808-1814. With the birth of the Regency period, styles changed quickly with the French influence appearing in the modern fashions of the day. Even the old fashion of Roman numerals on antique clocks changed to a refreshing Arabic style that lasted up to the end of the 1830’s. A lovely timepiece With over twenty years experience in restoring and conserving clocks and working on some of the finest and complicated clocks for a select group of the best antique clock dealers in the country.
