Alan Caiger-Smith Huge Studio Pottery Lustre Dish Alan Caiger Smith Caiger-Smith Lustre
Sorry, this item is now sold. If you are seeking a similar, feel free to contact me with your requirements. Thank you.

Offered here is a magnificent lozenge or 'spear' shaped dish by arguably one of the greatest (and certainly, one of the most original) studio potters of the 20th Century, Alan Caiger-Smith.

Constructed from red earthenware and measuring in at over 50cms wide, this can be considered a large/significant work.

It features a glorious and deftly painted abstract design in a copper and iron-rich red lustre over a ground of cool, muted earth colours. Difficult to photograph, the optical effect, when held and moved in the light, is stunning, with gold and copper flashing through to salmon pink and purples.

The painted design is both primitive yet sophisticated, organic yet calligraphic. A beautiful thing.

This piece, what with its less frequently seen shape, large dimensions and overall aesthetic can be considered to be of museum quality and is priced to sell.

It is fully signed to the underside.

More pictures to follow shortly......

More on Alan Caiger-Smith -

Alan Caiger Smith (b.1930, Buenos Aires, Argentina) studied at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts and read history at King's College, Cambridge (1949-1952). He trained in pottery at the Central School of Art & Design in 1954 under Dora Billington. In 1955 he established the now famous Aldermaston Pottery. A gifted and experimental artist/potter, throughout the second half of the 20th century he revived and perfected two virtually lost techniques - the use of tin glaze and painted pigments on red earthenware clay, and the firing of lustres on to tin glazes. He has written extensively on the subject of tin-glaze pottery and lustre decoration and today his pots are held in both public and private collections world-wide.
