Alphonse Muraton 1824-1911 French Pastel Portrait
We are delighted to offer for sale this lovely pastel portrait by the French artist ALPHONSE MURATON, who has signed the pastel half way down the right hand side. The portrait is of a young girl, with long dark curly hair, who is wearing a white dress with a lace frill across the shoulders and a lace cap on her head. She is holding a small bunch of flowers.
ALPHONSE MURATON, was born Frederic Alphonse Muraton on the 16th April 1824 in Tours. He studied at the School of Drawing in Tours and was a pupil of Michel Martin Drolling (1789-1851). His wife Euphemie and son Louis were also both listed artists. (Source - Benezit). He was a portraitist and painter of historical and genre scenes in both oil and pastel.
He exhibited portraits and genre subjects at the Paris Salon in 1859 and was awarded a Medal in 1868 for 'Les Deux Ermittes', which was purchased on the Civil List by Napoleon III and sent to the Louvre. It was returned to the Empress Eugenie, who sold it He also exhibited two paintings in 1872.
There are many of his paintings in Museums across France, including Tours, Avignon, Reims, Saint Brieux.
He died at La Source Mare near Menars on 28th December 1911.
As can be seen from the label verso, the painting was sold at some stage by a Gallery in Washington DC.
The pastel is executed on paper mounted on an oval board. It is mounted with washlines and is framed in a very nice 2 7/8" gilt frame with floral swept corners. It is ready to hang.
