An early 19thcentury Elm and ash candle stand An early nineteenth century Elm and ash
An early 19th century Elm and Ash candle stand, although fashion changes as to the naming of stools. Trending now to calling them lace makers stools and some time ago they were bed stools, as if something so small and low was going to provide much of a leg-up. By the same token all the stools in drawings, prints and paintings I can find show a stool around three inches high and comfortably wide enough for both feet. The idea being to raise the knees high enough to have level thighs upon which to sit the lace making pillow. Whereas a candle stand is to raise the height of the candle light on the table for eating or working. In those days in rural areas many could not afford to burn more than one candle at a time.
