Antique 19th Century Sunderland Pink Lustre Jug
A wonderful example of an antique Sunderland Lustre Gardener's Arms / Adam & Eve Jug.
Dating back to the early part of the 19th Century, Sunderland Lustreware can be found in orange and other colours, but it is the pink hues that are most collectable. Typical pieces of the time are religious plaques and jugs featuring a design incorporating the bridge over the River Wear, or various heraldic - especially Masonic - devices. This one features a transfer picture of the Gardener's Arms. on whose flag is a depiction of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, complete with serpent.
The rhyme on the other side welcomes the sailor home to England's shores and is surrounded by a foliate frame topped with a ship.
There are two cracks on the top rim, one going down into the spout, and a chip on the base, hardly surprising given the age of the item. None of these faults diminishes the attraction of the jug and it is priced accordingly.
Dimensions:
Height: 13cm
Diameter of top: 10cm
Width (including handle and spout) 18cm.
