This is a very striking hand painted Art Deco vase in the "Egypt" pattern by John Butler for Royal Staffordshire Pottery from the early 1920s. Royal Staffordshire Pottery was the brand name for A.J. Wilkinson Ltd, a company that is most famous for their association with Clarice Cliff, an apprentice of John Butler.

John Butler (1871-1935) was a ceramic artist and later art director for A.J. Wilkinson Ltd. Born in Burslem he came from a family of potters and pottery workers and went into the industry at a young age, describing himself as a pottery flower painter at the age of 19 on the 1891 census. His work earned him considerable respect and he was well-established by the start of the 20th century. Clarice Cliff worked under him from 1919, off and on until her own "Bizarre" range was launched in 1927. She would eventually become art director herself in 1930.

The discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922 generated a global fascination with all things Egyptian and it is no coincidence that this "Egypt" pattern by John Butler was registered in 1922/23. The vase has a ribbed body bearing a lotus flower design beneath a geometric band. It's a rather more subtle response to the Egyptian craze than many other pieces that were produced and has stood the test of time well. It is one of Butler's less commonly found patterns and seems to have only been used on vases and jugs for a fairly short period of time.

Condition of the vase is extremely good with no chips or cracks and no internal staining. It appears to have seen little use as a vase and was most probably on display as a decorative piece. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The vase is 11.8cm / 4.6" high and 7.5cm / 3" in diameter at it's widest point. It weighs 240g / 8.47oz.

The bottom of the vase has the Royal Staffordshire Pottery crowned lion stamp above Wilkinson Ltd, England. It has the pattern number 6998 for "Egypt" and the registered design number 688241 for 1922/23.
