Cocktails are one of the things most associated with the Art Deco era and one of the great cocktail accessories is a swizzle stick. Originally made of wood from the West Indies (where there's a tree called the "swizzle stick tree"!), in the Victorian era they were used to remove some of the bubbles from champagne to avoid the embarrassment of burping in public. By the twenties and thirties the sliding silver version had arrived and they were more commonly used for stirring the ingredients in your sophisticated cocktail.

This Sterling Silver version is made in England and dates to around the 1930s. It has a simple sliding mechanism akin to the early mechanical pencils that pushes up to reveal the stirrer and then pulls back in to avoid damage to the delicate end. The case is hexagonal with a ball finial at each end.

Condition is good with just the superficial wear you would expect after many years of use. The central wire leading to the ball finial is slightly curved but it still works perfectly for swizzling and opens and retracts smoothly.

The swizzle stick is 8.5cm / 3.3" long when retracted and 13.5cm / 5.25" long when open. It weighs 5.2g / 0.18oz.

There was an exemption from hallmarking in England for lightweight items at this time and the swizzle stick is simply marked "Made In England" and "Sterling" both clear to read on the lower part of the case.
