Art Nouveau Silver Bonbon Dish, H. Matthews, 1912 Art Nouveau George V Silver %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is a pretty Art Nouveau George V Sterling Silver Bonbon Dish, dating to just before World War One. The dish has six lobes with pierced sides and stands on three Art Nouveau style feet. There is also a Nouveau leaf pattern around the top rim.

Although probably originally intended for wrapped sweets, this versatile little dish could equally be used for nuts or snacks, as a trinket or antique jewellery dish on a dressing table or bedside cabinet, for small items of stationery on a desk, for potpourri or simply as an attractive item in its own right.

The dish is made in Birmingham by silversmith Henry Matthews and dates to 1912. Henry Matthews registered his mark in 1893 and ran his firm from premises in Vittoria Street in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. He made a very wide range of good quality silverware and remained in business up until around 1930.

Condition is good with just one small ding in the base, no damage to the delicate pierced sections and simply the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The bonbon dish is 10cm / 3.9ins in diameter across the top rim and stands 4.9cm / 1.9ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 50.8g / 1.8oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter n for 1912 and the H M makers' mark for Henry Matthews.
