Art Nouveau Silver Purse, Turnbull Bros, 1910
Here we have an elegant Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Purse with a Leather interior. The purse is basically oblong with curving sides and whiplash lines decorating each side. Silver chains extend from each end to a finger ring. The fitted tan leather interior has four compartments. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The purse was made in Birmingham by the Turnbull Brothers and dates to 1910. The Turnbull Brothers registered their mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1898. They produced a range of good quality tableware, flatware and items for personal use. The firm remained in business until about 1925.
Condition is very good, with just a couple of very small dings plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after around 115 years of good service. The hinge and the catch are in working order and the leather interior is also in very good condition and securely attached. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The purse is 12.6cm / 4.9cm across, 15.5cm / 6.1ins from the hinge to the top of the finger ring and 3cm / 1.2ins deep. It weighs in at a substantial 97.9g / 3.45oz, of which only a small amount is made up of the leather interior.
The hallmarks, just below the clasp, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter l for 1910 and the T.BROS makers' mark for Turnbull Brothers.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the purse.
