Here we have an Edwardian Sterling Silver long stemmed spoon in the Arts & Crafts style. The Arts & Crafts movement flourished in Britain between around 1880 and 1920. It was a reaction against the mass production techniques that dominated the later 19th century and indeed ever since. One of the elements of Arts & Crafts was looking back to old medieval styles and this spoon is very much in this category with its small bowl and long narrow arched stem.

The spoon is made by silversmiths John Grinsell & Sons, a firm founded in the Arts & Crafts period in the early 1880s. In keeping with the Arts & Crafts ethos, they produced mostly practical items of silver for use in the home. The spoon is made in Birmingham and dates to 1909.

Condition is good with no dings or dents and only the superficial surface wear that is to be expected after over 100 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The spoon is 13.8cm / 5.4" long and weighs a respectable 10g / 0.35oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "k" for 1909 and the JG & S makers' mark for John Grinsell & Sons.
