Beautiful early 18th Century Elm Tavern Settle
This wonderful curved settle would have once sat alongside the log fire in an old English tavern.
The high curved back, large wings and side panels are all there to keep out the winter drafts and it must have been a much used and loved seat in the tavern to have survived three hundred or so years in such excellent original condition.
The settle dates from around 1720 and is made completely in elm - a wonderful hard and heavy timber as durable as oak and particularly water and damp resistant. Over three centuries the elm has been waxed, buffed and washed and no doubt with a bit of beer now and then and has developed a very beautiful ripe melon colour with spectacular contrasting swirling grain.
A really good example with fully planked and pegged through with curved original elm braces. The seat shaped from a single plank of elm and the side panels made of single planks of elm also with a lovely shape softened by time.
The settle has three large elm drawers to the base with handles which are not original but are solid brass and which are in the original holes. Excellent condition, minor marks and bruises and you can see some marks on the front edge below the seat where it was once upholstered.
Whilst most of our photographs are taken in our showroom, I have also included some here which were taken in natural day light to show the vibrancy of the colour.
Dimensions are
Maximum width is 65 inches, depth is 14 inches and height is 59 inches.
Depth of the seat is 13 inches and height from the floor to the seat is 17 inches.
For metric please multiply each inch by 2.5
I describe and photograph my pieces accurately and with the aim that on arrival each will exceed expectations.
I operate a full refund guarantee and am always happy to give free, honest and friendly advice.
