Chippendale Period Mahogany Architect's Table

A good mid-18th century Chippendale period mahogany architect's table the hinged rising top with re-entrant corners and ratchet mechanism and 'pushout' bookrest to the front with pull-out circular brass candle stands flanking, the pull-out front compartmentalised drawer section with an important brass lock plate, hinged quadrant-shaped ink and quill compartment opening to the right-hand side, and a secret drawer to the left hand side, the whole raised on square section chamfered Marlborough-style legs concealing recessed brass castors, the sides with original brass swan-neck handles and the back with a large brass catch.
This has come privately from a local Solicitor’s office

There is a delightful painting of The Reverend Edward Foyle by Arthur Devis dating from about 1760 which shows the cleric leaning on just such a table with a double rising top in his library with rows of bookshelves in the background
