David Lloyd George 18ct Gold Watch - Historical In
Immense historical, political, Welsh, Wwi and David Lloyd George interest.
An 18ct. gold, half-hunter, pocket watch, keyless crown-wind, with white enamel Roman numeral dial and subsidiary Arabic numeral seconds, black enamel Roman numeral chapter ring. Fully hallmarked for Rotherham & Sons, London 1914. 48mm wide, gross weight 102.8g.
The backplate is engraved: "Presented to C.B. Pavey by The Rt.Hon. D Lloyd George O.M M.P in Appreciation of Services Loyally Rendered 1916 to 1929". Inspector Pavey was the long-term police bodyguard to Lloyd George. There are archive photographs of him with Lloyd George and family in the UK and abroad. From the date of the watch and the gift, I speculate that the watch was originally Lloyd George's own watch.
The watch has been newly serviced by The Clock Clinic, Putney and is in excellent physical condition consistent with age and use - little wear, minor surface scratching. I have more photos available for anyone interested in purchasing the watch.
Rotherham and Son are an English watch-makers/engineering firm dating from 1750 and in continuous operation since then.
The watch has an English full-plate movement made by Rotherham & Son, themselves. The movement has several features evidencing its quality:
It has a Breguet overcoil balance spring (this provides greater stability in the spring.
It has a split compensated balance (a bi-metallic device that maintains accuracy for temperature differences)
It is marked adjusted (this means the watch has been fine-adjusted for maximum accuracy in different physical orientations). This would not be worthwhile for anything other than a high-quality watch, since accuracy would generally be much more affected by differences in other factors than orientation.
The movement has eleven jewels which is a relatively high number for the period.
I trade in small silver, jewellery and objets d'art. I sell primarily at antiques fairs and in cabinets in Christique Antique Centre in Dorking. I try to find unusual and interesting stock and like to keep turning it over, so I can buy more. Postage and packing are free within the UK - unless explicitly stated otherwise. All fine jewellery will be supplied with a box. If the box/case is described in the text, it will be the one photographed, but may not be if it is not mentioned explicitly. I keep hardly any stock at home, if you want to buy something and need it urgently, I will usually do it the next day, but it may take me some time to respond if you need extra photographs and/or details about the piece that I do not have to hand, as I typically visit the antiques centre just once a week. If you don't see what you're looking for - feel free to send an enquiry via the site. I have only been able to list a portion of my stock.
I will always mention anything that materially affects the aesthetic or function of a piece, but will not attempt to describe what I consider to be normal for age and use. Please use the photographs as well as you can and I’m always happy to answer specific questions.
