D.G.Chatfield 1933-2007 Oil Schneider Trophy 1931 Donald G Chatfield 1933-2007 Oil Painting %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are offering for sale this evocative and historical aviation oil painting by the artist Donald Graham Chatfield, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and dated it 1978. On the back of the canvas, the artist has written D. G. Chatfield, Sywell Sep.1978 and Schneider Trophy 12.9.31. On the stretcher is written Supermarine S6B at Calshot.

This is one of three paintings by this artist with differing subjects that we will be listing over the next few days.

Calshot was the RAF base on the edge of Southampton Water, where the RAF flying boats were housed and the home of the RAF High Speed Flight, and was the base for the Schneider Trophy races in 1927,19 and 31. The Schneider Trophy Race, was held 12 times between 1913 and 1931 and was a speed trial. The British RAF High Speed Flight won it in '27, and '29 which meant that the country that won the trophy hosted the next Race. As the British won it for a third time in 1931, they were allowed to keep the trophy, which is housed at the Science Museum in London.

The Supermarine S6B was the latest in a succession of Supermarine flying boats, the S5s in '27 and the S6 in '29. Unfortunately, due to the Depression in the 1930s, the goverment of Ramsay MacDonald withdraw funding for the British to compete in 1931, but Lucy, Lady Houston stepped in with funding of £100,000 (£3.4 million in today's money).

The Supermarine S6B had the new Rolls Royce engine and was, along with its predecessors, designed by Reginald Joseph Mitchell CBE FRAeS, the famous aircraft designer, who designed the Spitfire, drawing on the design skills honed while designing the Supermarine seaplanes and, some say, saved Britain. His story is immortalised in the film The First of the Few, where he was played by Trevor Howard.
The S6B won the race with a world record speed of 380 mph.

Both Lady Houston and R. J. Mitchell were present at the race and it may well be her depicted in white to the left of the aircraft, as there is a photograph of her with the RAF team and Mr. Mitchell and she is dressed in white.

Donald Graham Chatfield was born on in 1933 in Northampton. He painted in both oils and watercolours and seemed to have specialised in aviation paintings. There are two of these in the National Collection at Chester Town Hill and in the Teignmouth and Shaldon Museum. Both of these paintings are visible online at ArtUK.org.

His auction results are available at the usual sites, but other than this we have been unable to discover further details about his life. He lived in Sywell, Northampton for many years, where he died in 2007.

The painting has been newly framed in a 2 1/2" gilt frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
