Dutch Silver Cake or Pastry Server, 1929
Here we have a beautifully decorated Dutch 833 Silver Server for small cakes or pastries from the 1920s. The blade of the server has a design featuring a man and a woman performing a musical duet, whilst another man watches on and the title HET DUET or "The Duet" based on a painting of the same name by Dutch master Gerard ter Borch. The stem is further decorated with swags and faces, whilst the large finial features a sailing ship.
The server was made in 1929 by Dutch silversmith P. Baardwijk of Nieuwpoort and assayed in Schoonhoven. Baardwijk is known to have been active in the tiny South Holland city of Nieuwpoort between 1926 and 1942.
Condition is very good with no dings, dents or damage and only the most minimal amount of surface wear. It seems likely that the server has seen little use and has primarily been kept for its decorative qualities. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The server is 21.3cm / 8.4ins long and weighs a substantial 57.2g / 2.02oz of solid silver.
As is usually the case with Dutch silver items, the hallmarks are dotted around the design of the server. At the bottom of the solid part of the blade below HET DUET is the lion passant and the number 2, indicating that it is 833 grade silver. Just below the musician on the left is the makers' mark PB6 for P. Baardwijk of Nieuwpoort. About halfway up the stem is the letter "T" for 1929 and on the sail of the ship is the Minerva duty mark with a letter "M" indicating that it was assayed in Schoonhoven.
