Edward VIII Silver Tea Caddy, William Hutton, 1936
Here we have a top quality Edward VIII Sterling Silver Tea Caddy of a good size. The caddy is oval with part reeded decoration around the lower part of the body and stands on a flat base. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The tea caddy is made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths William Hutton & Sons Ltd and dates to 1936, the sole year of Edward VIII's reign. Originally founded in Birmingham in 1800, the firm transferred to Sheffield in 1832. It remained under Hutton family control into the 1930s when it was finally absorbed into James Dixon & Sons.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 85 years of use. The hinge is in good working order and the lid shuts securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tea caddy is 10.5cm / 4.1ins wide, 8.2cm / 3.2ins deep and stands 8.4cm / 3.3ins high. It weighs in at a very substantial 228.9g / 8.07oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the upper part of the body are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter t for 1936 and the distinctive W H & Ss Ld makers' mark for William Hutton & Sons Ltd. In addition the inside of the lid is marked with the lion passant for Sterling Silver.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the tea caddy.
