Edwardian Silver Belt Buckle, S.M. Levi, 1901
This is an attractive Edwardian Sterling Silver Belt Buckle. The two part buckle has a hand cut pierced design of interlacing scrolls and a simple hook and bar clasp.
The buckle was made in Birmingham by Samuel M. Levi and dates to 1901. Founded by Samuel Levi in the 1880s, the firm operated from premises in Birmingham’s famous Jewellery Quarter primarily producing silverware for personal use such as cigarette cases, perfume bottles, powder compacts, vesta cases, buckles, photo frames and card cases, although they did also produce some tableware. After Samuel’s death the firm became S.M. Levi Ltd in 1931 and ceased trading at the start of the Second World War.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the pierced work and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The buckle is 7cm / 2.75ins across and 4.6cm / 1.8ins high. It weighs in at 16.6g / 0.59oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the back of the buckle, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter b for 1901 and the S.M.L makers' mark for Samuel M Levi. The other half of the buckle has a partial set showing the lion passant, the date letter and the makers' mark.
