Edwardian Silver Capstan Salt, Levi & Salaman 1908
This is an elegant Edwardian Sterling Silver Open Salt with its original blue glass liner. The salt is in the capstan style with a broad base and a narrow waist.
The salt is made in Birmingham by silversmiths Levi & Salaman and dates to 1908. Founded in 1870 by partners Phineas Harris Levi and Joseph Wolfe Salaman the firm produced many interesting and stylish items until they were finally taken over by Barker Brothers in 1921.
Condition is very good with just a little salt marking around the inside top rim. The blue glass liner has a small chip in the top rim but is still perfectly usable. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salt is 6.1cm / 2.4ins in diameter across the base and stands 3.2cm / 1.2ins high. Without the blue glass liner it weighs in at 24g / 0.85oz of solid Sterling Silver. With the liner it weighs 51.1g / 1.8oz.
The hallmarks on the side of the body are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter II for 1908 and the L & S makers' mark for Levi & Salaman.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
