Edwardian Silver Cheroot Holder Case, B'ham, 1909
This is a smart Edwardian Sterling Silver Cheroot Holder Case with a hinged lid and a Gilt interior. The case has the initials E G elegantly engraved on the front. Originally intended to house a cheroot holder this would work equally well as a small needle case.
The case was made in Birmingham by Henry Williamson Ltd and dates to 1909. Henry Williamson opened his first premises in London's Farringdon Street in 1879. The firm expanded to became Henry Williamson Ltd in 1894, opened a manufacturing premises in Spencer Street, Birmingham and also commissioned pieces from Sheffield to run alongside the London showroom. They specialised in small silverware items for the dining table, the dressing table or for personal use. The company finally ceased trading in the late 1920s.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no loss to the gilding on the interior and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 115 years of use. The hinge is in good order and the lid snaps shut securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cheroot holder case is 5cm / 1.97ins long and 1.4cm / 0.55ins in diameter. It weighs in at 6.5g / 0.23oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside rim of the case, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter k for 1909 and the H.W.Ld makers' mark for Henry Williamson Ltd.
