Edwardian Silver Plated Bread Basket, Atkin Bros
Here we have a very stylish Edwardian Silver Plated Bread Basket. It's a boat shaped oval dish with raised ends and a part reeded body in the Georgian or Regency revival style that was very popular in the Edwardian era. There is a handle cut into each end of the bread basket.
It's a very versatile piece that is obviously ideal for cut bread for the table but would work equally well as a general serving dish or would be great for snacks or wrapped sweets.
It is made in Sheffield by the well-known firm of Atkin Brothers and dates to around 1900 to 1910. Atkin Brothers was founded around 1840 as a successor company to that founded by Thomas Law around 1750. They were a very successful company and remained under the control of the Atkin family until they were bought out in 1958.
Condition is very good with no plate loss and just a couple of truly tiny dings in the base that do not effect the function or the appearance of the piece. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bread basket is of a substantial size, measuring 27.4cm / 10.75" from end to end, 16.7cm / 6.5" wide and stands 10cm / 4" tall at its highest point. It weighs 647g / 22.8oz.
The marks on the underside of the base are nice and clear to read. They show the Atkin Brothers trademark at the time of a hand holding 3 ostrich feathers, the initials HA, EA & FA for Harry Atkin, Edward Atkin & Frank Atkin of Atkin Brothers and the EPNS stamp for electroplated nickel silver, ie silver plate.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Hermes Tracked & Signed Courier.
