As seen in Laura M Mueller's 'Collector's Encyclopedia of Compacts, Carryalls and Face Powder Boxes' page 149.
This is probably the best Elgin American'Leaping Gazelles' Carryall you will find. It is complete & unused & in the most beautiful condition. Many people list these vanity cases as 1920s or 30s when in fact they were made in the late 1940s - early 1950s. They are Post Deco although the vibe is decidedly Art Deco - the embossed leaping gazelles leaping amidst the ferns. The carryall is superbly well made & very clean. Push the thumb catch to activate the spring loaded catch & the case glides open to reveal a good mirror & beautiful interior gleaming & gorgeous. There are two compartments adorned with embossed leaping gazelles. The powder well lid is signed 'Elgin American MADE IN U.S.A.' The powder well has a gorgeous satinzed finish & the original beautifully made sifter & adorable baby blue puff are in place. The puff has a silk ribbon signed 'Elgin American'. The next lidded compartment & the lipstick compartment are satinized too. The lipstick holder is clean & unused - one small scratch. The mechanism works perfectly. There is a money clip on a spring which works perfectly. The hinged mirror moves down to reveal another compartment (image four) for cigarettes or make-up. I am using a pen to hold down this lid as it is spring loaded. The whole item is superb. The lid & base are very beautiful - images one & two show the lid & six the base.
This is the perfect size as an evening bag / minaudiere when a handbag would look out of place.
This minaudiere measures 4 1/2" X " 1/2" X 1 1/2" & weighs 279 grams.
