Emil A. Krause Lge. Watercolour Coastal Scene Enil Axel Krause German Watercolour %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are delighted to offer for sale this very large watercolour by the artist EMIL AXEL KRAUSE, who has signed the painting E.A. Krause in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a coastal view, with a twin masted steam ship aground in a rocky bay with cliffs to the right. There is a rowing boat being pulled up onto the beach with several occupants and a figure still on board in the bows of the ship. The painting has been executed in the artist's typical palette.

There is a great deal of confusion over this artist, as he is frequently listed as Danish. However, there are two artist with the name Emil A. Krause. One was born in Copenhagen and lived in Denmark for his entire life, as far as we know. He painted almost exclusively in oils - rural scenes and scenes of fisherman and signed his paintings E.K normally. These are wrongly attributed to the other Emil Krause, whose biography we will give below. We know that our information is accurate, as we obtained it mostly from a relative and, on google, we came across a Danish site (which google can translate) which explained the difference and also showed a signature of the artist that we are listing, to differentiate from the Danish Emil Krause. Please see the link below

.

Our Emil Axel Krause was born in Biesdorf Germany as Friedrich Augustus Emil Krause and was the son of Franz Emil Herman Krause 1836-1900. He moved to England with his father sometime before 1891 and firstly lived at 42 Liverpool Road, Birkdale, Southport, Lancashire with his father, later moving to Conwy in North Wales. His mother was an Amelia Stock, whose father Johann Stock was also an artist. He officially changed his name to Emil Albert Stock in 1916, although he sometimes signed as A. Stock, presumably to anglicise his name due to the anti-German feeling during the WWI. He was buried in the Duke Street Cemetary in Southport with his mother and brother Richard. His father Francis was buried in Conwy.

The majority of the auction results sites, including artprice, artnet, findartinfo and arcadja attribute both artists' work to the Danish Krause and give his birth and death dates. The only site that shows both artists correctly is askart.com. Many online galleries selling his work also fall into the same trap, as they are presumable getting the details from the auction sites. The German Emil painted almost exclusively in watercolours, although we have found a couple of oils which are obviously his. We presume that he was taught by his father, as we have no knowledge of him studying art, although he may have done.

A watercolour of Mount Orgeuil Castle, Jersey the same size as this one, was sold by Christie's on lst March 2011 for £2,125. The majority of his painting are much smaller.

The painting is mounted and nicely framed in a 1 1/8" gilt frame. It is ready to hang.
