F. Flockton 1835-1901 Watercolour Still Life 1869
We are delighted to offer for sale this very finely detailed still life watercolour by the artist F. Flockton, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1869. The F. actually stand for Francis Stephen Flockton, who occasionally used the short form Frank, not Frederick, by which he appears to be listed incorrectly by auction houses and auction price sites. The painting depicts a pigeon and a mallard laid upon a mossy bank and is extremely lifelike. The artist was known primarily for his painting of mossy banks, with birds nests and, as in this case, birds. He also produced at least ten of rather surreal/fantasy pictures, with goblins and strange creatures etc with the theme of alcolol, religion, art and the devil. In later life, he turned to landscapes, but these minutely detailed still life watercolours are, in our opinion, his best work.
Francis was born in 1835, in North London into a comfortable household and, in 1851 was at school in Steyning, Sussex, listed as a gentleman. Strangely, his distant cousin Isabel Mary, who he later married in March, 1859, was at school in Brighton, so this may have been the start of a romance. By the Census of 1861, He, Isabel and their daughter Dora Mary, who was born in 1859 in Putney, were living in Carlisle Road, West Ham and his occupation is listed as a Russia Brokers Clark.
By the middle 1860s, Francis had thrown his secure occupation to the winds and become an artist. He and Isabel had acquired another daughter Margaret Lilian (of whom more later) born on 25th September, 1861 and yet another daughter, Isabel Phoebe born on 17th April, 1863. They were living in Streatley Village, Bradfield, Berkshire and Francis (Frank) was listed as an artist. They also had a servant.
After a stay in poor circumstances in South Wales, although I haven't been able to find them in the 1881 Census, and after finding that their hopes of an inheritance had gone, Francis and Isabel emigrated to Australia in the early 1880s. Both Dora Mary (Dolly) and Isabel Phoebe had presumably gone with their parents and Margaret Lilian followed in 1888. We know little about Francis and Isabel after they arrived in Australia, although Francis painted some landscapes. Francis died in July 1901 and Isabel in 1917 and both are buried in north Ryde, Sydney, New South Wales. However, they, through their daughters and descendents, made a significant contribution to their new country and art.
Margaret Lilian (1861-1953) became the first female lithographic illustrator of the Royal Botanical Gardens in Sydney, after whom an annual award is made by the Gardens and about whom a book has been written by another of the descendents of Francis, the author Louise Wilson. The book is entitled Margaret Flockton: A Fragrant Memory. Work by her was acquired by the National Art Gallery and her illustrations are exhibited at the Botanical Gardens. Isabel Phoebe, who died on 31/12/1960was also an artist.
One of his Granddaughters Phylis Clarke was an Australian Museum artist. His Great granddaughter Julia Woodhouse was a talented artist, who attended National Art School and his great great grandson, Andrew Dennis is an artist in Newcatle, Australia.
Francis Flockton is listed in the Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and his exhibition history 1866-1876, including 2 at the Royal Academy and 4 at Suffolk Street are listed in Graves Dictionary. The record paid for one of his watercolours is £2,372, but this was for one of his surreal/fantasy paintings at Christie's.
The painting has been newly double mounted in two-tone acid free mountboard and is newly framed in a 1 1/4" bronz.gilt frame to complement. It will be supplied with new brass hangers and new brass picture wire, ready to hang in your home without further expense.
