Fabulous Victorian Swiss Musical Box
A fabulous Large 19th century swiss made Cylinder Music Box made by Paillard of St Croix Switzerland. This delightful item boast The Royal Coat of Arms to the top and the front. The top has some rubbing but the front is fully intact. This box plays 8 airs and has its original list titled Piccolo Zither. This box is unusual being chromium plated, this would have been a very expensive option to choose and sets it apart from the more usual brass ones. The comb is fully in tact and the tunes all play well. The box has a working lock and key. I imagine this box resided in either a very important household or possibly an Officers Mess. There are two lovely brass carrying handles to either side. The box has tulip wood banding and a ebonised lipping.
The Royal Coat of Arms to the lid and front with words,
Borrowed from Middle French honi soit qui mal y pense (literally “shamed be whoever thinks bad of it” or “shame be to him who thinks evil of it”. The general theme is to think positive and good thoughts about others to avoid negativity affecting your own life.
Dieu et mon droit, Old French: Deu et mon droit), meaning "God and my rights", is the motto of the British monarch. It is depicted on a scroll beneath the shield of the British Coat of Arms. The motto is said to have first been used by Richard I (1157-1199) as a roar, referring to his French ancestry (indeed he could speak French and Occitan, but basic English). only knew) and is presumed to be a reference to the concept of God. the right of the monarch to rule. It was adopted as the royal motto of England by Henry V (1386-1422) with the phrase "and my rights" referring to his claim by lineage to the French royal family.
