This is a very attractive landscape oil on canvas by the artist Frank (Francis) Dickson, who signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting is entitled 'Bluebells' on a plaque on the original gilt slip. The painting depicts a young girl wearing a dark coloured dress covered by a white apron and with a pink bonnet over her long dark hair, walking in a wooded area. She has a large bunch of bluebells in her left hand, with a wicker basker full of bluebells and other flowers in her right. There is a small peaty streem beneath the trees to the left.

Francis Dickson, known as Frank, was born in the second quarter of 1862 near Chester. He was one of eight children, the son of Francis A. Dickson, who was an ex-Sheriff, Alderman, ex-Major, Councillor, JP, seed merchant and nurseryman, employing 150 men. The young Frank was educated in Liverpool, but his art education was at the St.John's Wood Art School and the Royal Academy Schools in Kensington.

He was a figure, flower and landscape painter. In the 1891 Census, he was a boarder in Abinger, near Dorking Surrey, aged 29 and listed as a landscape painter. He was married to Ethel Kathleen who was born in Londonderry at some stage, although it has proved difficult to find the date of his marriage, although he was visitin his mother-in-law in London in 1911. His only son Ian V. O'B was born in London in 1907 and, by the 1921 Census, the family were living at 18A Victoria Road, Lambeth. He died in King's College Hospital on 21st January 1936 and probate was given to his wife Thel of 8 Farquhar Road, Upper Norwood, Surrey with assets of £1,833.

He was elected a full Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in1896, with whom he exhibited 51 paintings, as well as 8 at the Royal Academy, ll in Birmingham, l in Liverpool, 2 in Manchester, RHA, 5 and ROI 8.

He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club), The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, Painters in Northern Counties of England and Wales by Dennis Child and the Dictionary of British Artists by Grant M. Waters.

The painting retians its original 1 1/2 inch gilt wood slip and has been newly framed in a matching 2 inch frame. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.

Medium: Oils on canvas

Condition: Very good. There is one small historic repair as shown, as shown, some craquelure to the sky area and slight stretcher marks. The slip is original and the frame is new..
