George III Cut Glass & Silver Vinegar Bottle, 1792 George III Georgian Cut Glass %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is an elegant George III Cut Glass Vinegar Bottle with a Sterling Silver Collar, Lid and Handle. The body is deep cut into diamond shapes with a cross in the centre of each. At the bottom of the neck is a faceted ring and the neck is then slice cut to taper into the silver collar and lid. There were originally a set of initials engraved on the lid but these have been virtually polished away over the course of time and can no longer be read.

This would originally have been a vinegar bottle or jug but today it could equally be used for olive oil, for salad dressing or as a small water or wine jug.

The bottle is made in London by silversmith Henry Chawner and dates to 1792. Henry Chawner registered his first mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1786 and worked from premises first at Amen Corner and then in Paternoster Row making a wide range of domestic silverware. In 1796 he formed a partnership with John Emes which lasted until around 1808 after which he appears to have retired with his wife and family to a large country house in Newton Valence, Hampshire. In 1801 he was elected to the Court of Assistants, the council of the Livery Companies of the City of London.

Condition is very good, with just one small chip in the glass in the bottom rim, which you have to look hard to find and the overall superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 230 years of service on the table. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The bottle stands 17.4cm / 6.8ins high and is 5cm / 1.9ins in diameter at its widest point. It weighs 353g / 12.4oz.

The hallmarks, on the lower part of the collar, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter r for 1792, the George III duty mark and the H C makers' mark for Henry Chawner. There is also a lion passant for Sterling Silver on the inside of the lid.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the vinegar bottle.
