This is an elegant George III Sterling Silver Salt Spoon in the Old English pattern with Bright Cut decoration. The development of new, harder steel tools in the late 18th century enabled silversmiths to cut sharp facets into their silverware so that they sparkled when they caught the light. The spoon has no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The spoon is made in London by silversmith George Burrows and dates to 1799. George Burrows registered his mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1769 and is principally known for his flatware although he did also make other items. He died around 1799/1800, so this is a very late piece by him. After his death his wife Alice and son George Jr carried on the business.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no salt corrosion and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 220 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The salt spoon is 10.3cm / 4ins long and weighs 8.4g / 0.29oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter D for 1799, the George III duty mark and the GB makers' mark for George Burrows (senior).
