George IV Mahogany Wardrobe by William Trotter
Circa 1820, good 2 door wardrobe by William Trotter of Edinburgh, with wonderful selected mahogany veneers and extensive use of flame mahogany. The cornice has a protruding top section which is cross banded above wonderful form of gadrooning in the half round. Beneath this an ogee moulding and a flat section with matching flame mahogany. Beneath the cornice there are 2 full length doors with fielded panels on the top and the bottom, and all the classical features of William Trotter, with sunk beading, the flame mahogany and the framed doors. Below the bottom of the top panels there is a section which is framed in the form of quilling and this runs around the side of the wardrobe. Inside has been lined in fabric. On the right hand side there are the original wooden pegs and additional brass rail which has been put in later, and on the left hand side are some unusual features. There is an adjustable shelf at the top and 2 drawers in the centre which are concave to prevent the knob handles interfering with the doors. Beneath this there is an open section and a hinged lid which reveals a large storage compartment. Beneath the doors there is another squat section with quilling and the whole piece stands on 4 turned, fluted and tapering legs finishing on squat bulbous feet. This is a very good example of an early hanging wardrobe.
