George V Silver Dwarf Candlestick, Birmingham 1935
This is a very elegant George V Sterling Silver Dwarf Candlestick from the mid-1930s. The candlestick was made by Broadway & Co in Birmingham and dates to 1935. William Broadway founded his silversmith company in 1900 and it is still in business today.
This Dwarf Candlestick is nicely made with a broad circular base, ring decoration and a well shaped sconce. It is nice and stable and has a thin leather cover on the base. This type of small candlestick was generally used on a desk to heat sealing wax before applying it to letters and documents. For this reason they are usually found as singles as against decorative candlesticks which most often come as pairs or more. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Condition is generally good with no dings or dents and just the minor wear and tear that you would expect. The candlestick is 6.5cm high and 5.9cm in diameter across the base. It weighs 79.8g but this does include the ballast material put in the base for stability.
The hallmarks on the side of the base are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "L" for 1935, the George V silver jubilee mark and the B & Co makers' mark for Broadway & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £5 by Hermes Tracked & Signed courier.
