George V Silver Egg Cup, Mappin & Webb, 1928
This is a stylish heavy George V Sterling Silver Egg Cup. The cup has a circular base with a ring of beaded decoration on the top of it and a top rim which has been folded in to give a smooth line to the outside. The initials P.B.P have been engraved on the front of the egg cup.
The egg cup was made in Sheffield by world famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb and dates to 1928. One of the best known names in English silverware was originally founded in 1810 by Joseph Mappin Snr, in 1859 the firm split into two parts which would become Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb. They were reunited when Mappin & Webb bought Mappin Brothers in 1902. The firm remained in the Mappin family until it was merged with Walker & Hall and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 95 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The egg cup stands 6cm / 2.3ins high and is 4.5cm / 1.8ins in diameter across the top rim. It weighs in at a very respectable 59.2g / 2.09oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, just below the rim of the egg cup, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter l for 1928 and the M & W makers' mark for Mappin & Webb.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
