George V Silver Jam Spoon, Sheffield, 1925
This is a good quality George V Sterling Silver Jam Spoon. The spoon has a broad leaf shaped bowl so you can scoop up a good quantity of jam, a columnar stem and a broad tapering finial with a blank cartouche.
The jam spoon was made in Sheffield for The Sheffield Goldsmiths Co Ltd and dates to 1925. The Sheffield Goldsmiths Co was a retail jeweller and silversmith which operated from a number of premises over the course of time. The company claimed to be founded in the reign of George III but that may not be strictly accurate. In the early 1900s they moved to premises in Fargate and remained there for many years. They registered a silver mark at the Sheffield assay office in the early 1920s for pieces ordered specifically for sale in their store.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 95 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jam spoon is 12.4cm / 4.9ins long and weighs in at a respectable 17.6g / 0.62oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the bowl, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter h for 1925 and the S.G Co Ltd makers' mark for The Sheffield Goldsmiths Co Ltd. In addition there is a registered design number of 686759 on the underside of the stem, showing that the design was originally registered in 1921/2 and the retail stamp for The Sheffield Goldsmiths Co Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
