Here we have a George V Sterling Silver Butter Dish in the traditional shell design. The butter dish is made by Horace Woodward & Co Ltd and was assayed in London in 1911. Horace Woodward founded the company in the 1870s. They had manufacturing premises in Birmingham and retail premises in London's prestigious Hatton Garden district with makers' marks entered at both assay offices. They were in business up until the early 1920s.

The butter dish is in the form of a scallop shell, which was one of the most traditional designs for butter dishes. It has a flat handle and stands on three ball feet. Although designed as a butter dish, it works just as well as a ring or trinket dish and would be equally at home on a dining table or dressing table.

Condition is very good with no dings or dents and only the superficial surface wear you would expect after 110 years of service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The dish is 9.5cm / 3.75" long, 8cm / 3.1" wide and 2cm / 0.8" high. It weighs a respectable 35.2g / 1.24oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the upper side of the flat handle section are clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "q" for 1911 and the quatrefoil HW & Co Ld makers' mark for Horace Woodward & Co Ltd.
